“Caps for Caring”Three of our preschool students still have plenty of room to spare in the bin that the students and staff at Withamsville Elementary are trying to fill as a service project. A local recycling facility has agreed to collect our caps in exchange for dollars that will be donated to cancer research. Please join our effort by collecting and donating plastic bottle caps from pop, juice, water or milk containers. The only requirement is that you turn in clean caps. This will be on on-going project for the duration of the school year.

Withamsville-Tobasco Elementary has been recognized by the Ohio Dept. of Education as a School of Promise. WT is one of only 122 schools (out of 2, 020 eligible) to earn this honor!

Mrs. Robinson's 4th Grade Class

Mrs. Robinson's 4th grade class created a flag to honor those who sacrificed their lives on September 11. The flag was passed around to each classroom in our building where each student signed their name as a way to say "thank you". Students submitted several designs for what our 9/11 flag should look like and through the process of democratic voting, this design was chosen. 13 red and white stripes would be accompanied by a blue rectangle displaying the message "In memory of those who sacrificed". Also on the blue rectangle are the names of 25 men and women who lost their lives on September 11. While participating in this project students used math skills to make the measurements for the flag, used their literacy skills in coming up with the flag's slogan, used technology skills in researching facts about September 11, used their creativity and art skills in coming up with a design and use cooperative learning to work together as a team.

Be it resolved that the West Clermont Board of Education does hereby direct the administration to restore the following reductions effective January 2, 2012, should the November 8th levy pass:
Transportation to be restored to 2010-2011 school year levels.
All buildings shall be open to community use, per board policy.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the West Clermont Board of Education does hereby direct the administration to restore the following reductions effective at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, should the November 8th levy pass:
Provide Music, Art, Gym, Gifted and Media services for all elementary buildings.
Athletic fees will be reduced to $150 per sport.

9/11/11 Update

Thank you for your support as we continue to improve our drop-off and pick-up plan at Withamsville. Starting Monday we will add another drop-off and pick-up area. Parents will now be permitted to use the service drive (located on 125) at arrival and dismissal. If you use this drive you will only be able to exit right onto 125. To create two zones we will close the gate between the the two driveways. If you enter from Britton Blvd. you will also need to exit onto Britton Blvd. Staff will be available to unload and load students in both areas. We hope this new plan will help with traffic issues and also move things along more quickly. I hope you had a great weekend! Tonya Schmidt

All Kindergarten students must have a physical and shot record on file to be eligible to attend school.

Remeber that you can turn right and use the service drive after you drop-off or pick-up your child each day. The traffic moves more quickly when heading East on 125.

To make drop-off move more quickly please have your WT child sitting on the curb or passenger side of your vehicle.

Many of you walked to pick up children today. If you plan to walk to pick up your child each day please send a note so we can release your student at 2:45 with walkers. Walkers will be released on the secondary exit located to the right of the main entrance.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students need to walk with an older sibling or be released to an adult for safety reasons.

Welcome back to school! It was wonderful to see so many families at Open House. I hope you are all excited to return to school on Tuesday. We are ready to kick off another great year at WT. Just a couple of reminders to make the first day run smoothly. We will begin releasing students from busses and cars at 8:45. All teachers will be outside to receive students in the morning. If you are walking your child please take them directly to the main entrance where you will leave them with a teacher from their grade level. Breakfast is offered on the first day of school beginning at 8:45. Be sure you send your childs backpack on the first day. Please be sure that you have returned the form that tells how your child will get home each day. Parents of K or 1st grade students that are walking need either an older child or adult to meet them each day. If you are picking up your child be sure you have your car tag. Remeber, for safety reasons, parents without tags will need to sign out thier child in the office. Thank you for your support as we get in our new routing of drop off and pick-up! Important Changes for 2011-2012 at WT
New School Hours:
9:00-3:00 (previously 9:10-3:40)
Breakfast –8:45
All elementary buildings will close 30 minutes after the end of the school day.
Pre-School :
Preschool students will be assigned to attend either Tuesday/Thursday OR Wednesday/Friday all day from 9:00-3:00. Families will receive more detailed information in August.
Kindergarten:
Kindergarten students will be assigned to attend school either Monday/Wednesday and alternating Fridays OR Tuesday/Thursday and alternating Fridays all day from 9:00-3:00. Families will receive more detailed information in August.
Transportation:
Only students who reside in the area determined to be 2 or more miles from school OR those who have been previously notified that special transportation will be provided will be riding buses. Buses will not stop at day care centers or sitters’ houses. This means that most students attending WT will not have bus service and parents will be responsible for providing transportation to school.
Each family will receive more detailed information in August with drop-off and pick up procedures as well as procedures for walkers. For students who will be driven to school, we will begin unloading cars at 8:45.

Staff Sargent Ronald Stidham visits Ms. Janes Pre-school at WT Elementary. Sargent Stidham is in the Army Reserves and he leaves soon to serve in Afghanistan for one year. He made a special visit to WT to visit with his son and the other members of Ms. Jane's class. We will keep this special soldier in our thoughts and prayers as he serves our country!

Rachel Ritchey and Susan Henize were featured presenters yesterday at the Free-Tech Conference. The presentation "A Cinderella Story" highlighted the journey from no-tech to high-tech at Withamsville Elementary. Mrs Nazzarine and Mrs. Schmidt gave a brief history of the move into the new building and District initiatives. Ritchey and Henize captured the attention of the audience with lessons integrating technology. The true stars of the show were the pre-school students that were featured in video clips during the presentation. Nothing says "technology rocks" like three and four year old students sqealing, jumping, and clapping over their accomplishments at the Smart Board and Tap-it!

I have had several parents ask me about the WT "Go for the Gold" challenge. I thought others might be wondering about our preperations for the upcoming Ohio Achievement Assessment. The challenge is actually very simple, we are asking each student to give 100% effort in all areas as they prepare to do thier best on the upcoming assessment. Each child will be evaluated on a weekly basis on individual effort and improvement. We are asking that students take their "training" for the test very seriously think like olympians do as they train for their big event. The payoff for their effort is a great outcome on the test and an opportunity to celebrate their hard work at a dance that will be held when we have completed the assessments. I am very pleased with the effort I am seeing in our classrooms! Go for the Gold Bobcats! Please let me know how you are training for the big event!

It was a busy week for WT staff and students! On Thursday many teachers were able to get their first tour of the new facility. It was so much fun to be the tour guide for the event. If I had to pick my favorite moment if would definitely be the reaction of Mrs. White when she entered her new music room. She was so excited she had to sing to check out the acoustics! Her voice sounded amazing, I can't wait to hear the children sing in their new space. More building photos have been posted on the website and also on my blog. I hope you had a wonderful weekend. I thought you might enjoy this picture. Many of you know that I have a Jack Russell named Tater. When I found this picture it made me laugh. I tried to get Tater to read a book with me so Mr. Schmidt could take a picture of us to post. Tater would not sit still for the picture. I decided I would just post this picture. I am reading 2 books right now. The first is a book about school bullying titled "Please Stop Laughing at me" the other book is by Seth Godin and the title is Linchpin.I am reading Linchpin with other West Clermont staff that are involved in a book study. I would like to know what WT students and teachers are reading. Please post what you are reading and write a little bit of information about your book.
